The Car that’s Going to Kill You Is Coming from the Right (and if that doesn’t kill you, zebra crossings will)…

….because, as we know, in the UK (and in some of its ex-colonies) you drive on the left. This is not confusing just for drivers but also for pedestrians for whom cars will appear on unexpected sides of the road, going in unexpected directions. For the first few days, when stepping into the road, you will automatically look left and then right, because that’s what you are used to doing. After a bit you will remember that that is the wrong way to go about it and will start making an effort to do the opposite of what instinct and habit tell you.

Life in the UK: Pepperoni Pizza and Other Surprises

Although I was born and grew up in Italy my mum is English and so, when I moved to the UK for a Masters degree, I did so with all the confidence that speaking the language and being familiar with the culture can give you. As it turned out, despite having spent many summers in England throughout my childhood and adolescence, I didn’t know as much about Britain as I thought.

Go! Spike by Norwich Spikers

There was an open Go! Spike weekend as a part of Go! Spike campaign hold by Spikers Norwich Club at Eaton Park Norwich. The Spikers set up and ran two open “come and play” courts on Saturday as well as on Sunday. They were giving a chance to passers to come and try to play some volleyball.

It was a lovely sunny weekend.

Career Development in the British Army.

Hi there.

My name is Chris Wilkinson and I have decided to share my experiences as a soldier in the British army. I will add smart parts of my story in serial form.

Small World

When I came to a voluntary fair at the Voluntary Norfolk office last year I didn’t know what to expect. The lady at the desk, a few weeks before the fair, said that it would be a big venue with lots of charities present. Then I came and saw just five tables occupied and one of these tables was actually information desk. I thought, well, there are probably not that many charities in Norwich then. Of course, not only charities need volunteers. So, I expected the NHS would be there, for example.

Al(l)right, half left or all left president?

People in the Czech Republic are facing the first direct presidential election. Previous presidential elections were fulfilled by votes of members of the Czech parliament. Since the dissolution of the then Czechoslovakia there have been two presidents; Vaclav Havel, well known dramatist and Vaclav Klaus, well known liberal economist. Both of them people may either love or hate, each of them for very different things.

The Old Year

There will be a new year shortly. So, what to say about the last year? Because I am not dependent on media, I would say it wasn’t bad at all. If I watched tv or read papers too much I would be full of bad news and unduly worried about whatever crisis, about our countries, world and life.

So, pros and cons. The only thing which I haven’t reached yet is a decent job in my level of experience, knowledge and education. However, this is something I can still change in the future. Not only I can but I will.
